Trailblazing: Successes and Mistakes of an ‘Accidental’ Millionaire

Make sure you catch the opening session at this year’s Kent 2020 Vision LIVE for a lively and entertaining keynote about the trials and tribulations of trailblazing a new market niche…

Deirdre Bounds is one of the UK’s top female entrepreneurs and founder of the UK’s first ethical travel company: i-to-i Travel. But her journey from penniless student to ‘accidental’ millionaire was marked by some significant mistakes as well as many remarkable successes.

Deirdre-Bounds(Cropped)At the start of the new Millennium, Deirdre’s ground-breaking approach to the packaged holiday sector created an entirely new niche within a crowded market, dominated by a number of long-established major players. By riding the wave of increasing consumer awareness about ethical issues and offering a high-quality alternative to the status quo, Deirdre was able to launch and build i-2-i Travel into the world’s largest gap-year company over the course of just ten years, before eventually selling the company to TUI for £16m in 2009.

Needless to say, such rapid growth is never plain sailing – as you will discover in this illuminating (and sometimes painfully honest) account of building an international business from scratch and creating an entirely new market segment in the process. Hopefully, you can learn as much from the company’s mistakes as you will from what went well.

Deirdre is a straight-talking businesswoman with a passion for doing things differently. Her CV lists her as former stand-up comic, world backpacker, English teacher, outback bus driver, reformed alcoholic and mother of two. She has appeared on Sky News, Radio Four and GMTV and is a regular commentator on Radio 5 Live about women in business, financial matters and the class system. She was also one of eight entrepreneurs chosen by Channel 4 to spend four weeks in Africa bringing enterprise ideas to a poverty stricken Ugandan village.

So you can be sure she has plenty to talk about!

Deirdre is speaking at 9.30am on Thursday 25th April. You can register online and pre-book your place at her keynote at www.kent2020.co.uk.

By reserving your place in advance, you will also benefit from fastrack entry, priority parking and a chance to win an iPad Mini on the day – plus access to over 300 exhibitors and a range of free workshops on key challenges for Kent businesses.

Onepot: Bringing a Great Idea to Life

Kent 2020 Vision LIVE is especially pleased to be welcoming new start-up Onepot Ltd as an exhibitor at this year’s event.

The founders of this exciting new business visited our new start-up show last October and became the lucky winners of the amazing ‘Kickstart’ prize (worth over £5,000).

The concept for Onepot began nearly two years ago with the idea of providing healthy, home-cooked family meals with the added convenience of a no-mess approach.

But it was not until last year that the business really started to take shape and its launch has been accelerated significantly by the ‘Kickstart’ package of specialist business advice and exclusive marketing opportunities.

One component of the prize was a stand at this year’s Kent 2020 Vision LIVE on 25th April, which has now become the official launch of the new brand.

OnePotOnepot’s ethos is that every family should have the opportunity to eat delicious home-cooked meals, but recognises that many families lead busy lives and may not have the time or knowledge of how to prepare a helathy dinner each night. Hence, Onepot meals are designed to fit easily around busy day-to-day life – giving busy families one less thing to worry about!

The company is a small family-run business, driven by a love of food and great local produce. All meals are prepared by hand in Onepot’s kitchens, using the same fresh ingredients that families might use at home. No artificial additives or preservatives are added and only the best locally sourced ingredients go into the recipes.

SOUND GOOD?

Visit Stand No.699 for a delicious taster of the Onepot dishes (if they haven’t all been eaten)!

New Feature: Charity Auction in memory of Kevin Lynes

This year there’s a new direction for the evening event traditionally held after the main Kent 2020 Vision LIVE exhibition and conference…

To recognise the significant support and contribution the late Kevin Lynes gave to Kent 2020 Vision LIVE we are holding a charity auction in aid of the charity set up in his memory – The Kevin Lynes Apprenticeship Scheme (KLAS). An enhancement to the existing Bursary Scheme for Apprentices, KLAS is a special fund for the benefit of young people, resident in low-income households in Kent, who require funding to benefit from an Apprenticeship Scheme.

Support for the auction has been phenomenal, with over 20 lots donated – many of which money (usually) can’t buy. The right bid can secure some truly unique opportunities including:

  • A day making ice cream with Taywells
  • Cheese making with Winterdale Cheese
  • Behind-the-scenes tour of Chatham Dockyard
  • A day working with Kent Police
  • Private tour of HadlowGardens with their Head Groundsman
  • Group BMX session with a British Cycling coach at the new CycloPark
  • Fantastic wine lover’s tour with Chapel Down Vineyard

Plus a range of other great items on offer, including Hornby trainsets, tickets to Kent attractions and events, luxury hampers and even a stand at Kent 2020 Vision LIVE 2014!

To hold together what promises to be a fun and lively evening we are delighted to have the services of Kent’s most famous auctioneer, Clive Emson. In his own eponymous building at the Kent Event Centre, Clive will be running the bidding and keeping everyone in line, adding his own personality and humour to the event.

In addition to the auction, the evening will be a fantastic way for those that were at the event to unwind and reflect on the day and network with their peers from the Kent business community. All this in a relaxed atmosphere, with good honest food and a glass or two of wine.

Tickets cost just £25 + VAT, including dinner and drinks.

Book your place now by downloading a booking form at: www.kent2020.co.uk/application.html.

Manufacturers: Is Your Company Fit to Double its Turnover in Five Years?

For SME manufacturers, growth can be a real challenge. Increase demand for your products too quickly – before your systems, finances and people are in a position to be able to cope – and you risk sinking your business before you even start.

It’s easy to get bogged down in the day-to-day challenges of running a business, but if you’re serious about growth, developing a structured manufacturing strategy for the next three to five years is vital – which is why you should speak to the Manufacturing Advisory Service (MAS) when you visit Kent 2020 Vision LIVE on 25th March..

Planning for growth takes focus, commitment, and a willingness to listen to people from all areas of your business. Everyone involved needs to know where the business is heading, why, and most importantly, what is required of them as individuals to help get you there.

By identifying where your company is currently, where you want to be and what’s stopping you, you can prepare to grow in a structured and controlled way across a determined time period.

Isn’t it just common sense stuff?

It’s true to say most people think they know what they ‘should’ be doing to grow their company, but pulling together the issues and priorities from across different areas of a manufacturing business and making sure everyone is working towards the same goal is no easy task. Strategic planning certainly isn’t a ‘one person job’. You’ll need to get input and buy-in from all areas of the business to make this work.

On the face of it, planning the future direction of the business seems simple … but what are the potential issues and problems, how do you tackle them in a structured way and how do you ensure your staff share your sense of ambition?

How are you currently perceived by your customers and competitors, and what are they expecting of you in the next three years? What are they planning, and do your ideas compliment theirs?

Muddy waters by anyone’s standards.

Can I develop a strategic plan myself?

You can certainly develop a strategic plan yourself, but it requires a real commitment and ability to see your business objectively and impartially. Be prepared to listen to opinions from all areas of the business, not just your own.

Getting advice from an outsider who has ‘been there and done it’ can be invaluable.

Each company has its own set of issues and priorities, and who better to recognise those in your business than you. But an outsider can help you understand how others perceive you, and spot the cultural and practical issues you might miss as an ‘insider’.

They can also keep you on track and make sure you set aside regular time to focus implementing your growth plan.

How do I find the right help?

External support with strategic planning won’t just give you a true focus and direction for the business, but will also help you identify the priority projects that will overcome your barriers to growth.

An experienced Manufacturing Advisory Service (MAS) Advisor, with a proven track record in manufacturing support, can work with you to:

  • Identify your real barriers to growth
  • Develop and test your current strategy
  • Ensure team buy-in
  • Create a meaningful Action Plan
  • Support you to implement your Action Plan
  • Put suitable measures in place to monitor your performance
  • Be on-hand for regular advice as a ‘sounding board’ for future ideas/decisions

If you’re an SME manufacturer, MAS could also provide grant funding of up to 50% towards your project (to a maximum of £300 per day).

Does the MAS approach work?

Some recent MAS clients:

“Aside from bottom line savings and increased efficiency and productivity levels since working with MAS, we have been equipped to achieved an above standard growth rate, employing more staff to cope with this increase. Perhaps more importantly communication amongst staff has improved tenfold and individuals are now encouraged to ‘take ownership’ of the products and improvements in their area – there is real team spirit amongst the shopfloor and our sales department that could be considered of more benefit than any monetary gain that can be identified.”

– James Clephan, Production Director, B-Loony

“Working with MAS provided support and expertise in areas that I had no or limited experience in which was invaluable in terms of gaining a competitive edge in the market and growing my business during a challenging climate.”

– Jacob Marsh, Director, ModMyPi LTD

What will developing a manufacturing growth plan really give us?

  • An agreed consensus on the future of the company
  • Implementation of a rational three to five year growth strategy
  • Prepare for growth in a controlled and structured way
  • Operational objectives and action plans for each department
  • Linkage between the personal objectives of your people and your growth plan
  • Implementation of clear measures to monitor your performance

This isn’t a ‘Lean’ project so don’t expect the results to be immediate. Planning for growth is about the medium to long term. If you’re serious about growing your business, this is absolutely where you need to start.

If you’d like a confidential chat about strategic planning, visit MAS on Stand 763/765 at Kent 2020 Vision LIVE for a straightforward, no-nonsense discussion of your business needs.

A programme of presentations and workshops has been developed for Kent 2020 to detail the business benefits of Kent International Business and the EU projects featuring in the zone. A Beginner’s Guide to Effective PR

Practical advice for exhibitors (and visitors) at Kent 2020 Vision LIVE – from David Ing, Managing Director of CFA Group, PR partner & exhibitor at the show.

Public relations (PR) has always been one of the most efficient marketing tools – it’s cost effective, versatile and suitable for every company and organisation. However, for many organisations, PR is seen as a mystical and complex process and has a number of hurdles. In some instances PR can be complex, as a vital tool to change people’s perceptions, engage with influencers and address crisis issues, and this requires a detailed strategy, methodology and time. However, at a basic level PR is a simple process that virtually any organisations can employ.

What Is PR?

Every organisation, no matter how large or small, ultimately depends on its reputation and visability for survival and success.

Customers, suppliers, employees, investors, journalists and other stakeholders can have a powerful impact. They all have an opinion about the organisations they come into contact with – whether good or bad, right or wrong. These perceptions will drive their decisions about whether they want to work with, shop with and support these organisations.

Effective PR can help manage reputation by communicating and building good relationships with all organisation stakeholders.

The definition of PR according to the Chartered Institute of PR (CIPR) is as follows: –

” Public relations is about reputation – the result of what you do, what you say and what others say about you.

Public relations is the discipline which looks after reputation, with the aim of earning understanding and support and influencing opinion and behaviour. It is the planned and sustained effort to establish and maintain goodwill and mutual understanding between an organisation and its public. “

PR in Practice

PR can take many different forms according to type of organisation – for example media relations, investor relations, public affairs, corporate communication, marketing or customer relations.

As an entry level, organisations should consider PR as a tool to talk to key audiences such as existing customers, former customers, target customers and staff. Often an audience that is overlooked – staff are ambassadors for your organisation and should be kept informed about company progress and developments as through contact with friends, family and work colleagues they naturally spread the word). With these audiences in mind, think about what you should be telling them – for many this is hurdle number one.

Identifying a Good PR Story

Often, organisations do use PR as they feel they don’t have anything newsworthy. WRONG! Everyone has a story to tell.   No matter what your business is, you are doing something that you should be telling other people about. ‘PR blindness’ is often associated to the fact that people are so close to what they are doing that they don’t see it as interesting and this is the case in organisations both large and small. In many cases people see their latest project completion, a new contract win, the opening of a new store or the development of a new product as ‘just what we do’ – yes it is what you do but it is also the basis for a great PR story.

Identifying the PR Opportunity

So where should organisations start? Look at what you do. Whether you provide a service or products, there is a story in what you do as a company. It may be a bit of ‘reinventing the wheel’ but for customers that have not heard of you, what you offer is new in their eyes.

As a result of the economy, any companies have enhanced or developed new products or services or diversified into new markets – this is newsworthy. Any service or product enhancements make a great story. The washing powder companies are great at making their products ‘even whiter’ and your story is just the same.  The best way to identify PR stories is to take a cross section of what your company does in terms of the products and services it offers, the work it has completed (case studies about successful project deliveries or long standing relations with clients make great case studies) and start writing down these opportunities.

In addition, people like views and opinions. If there is something happening within your industry that you have a strong view or opinion on, tell people about it – this will help position you and your company as experts within this field.   There are plenty of other PR opportunities lurking within every company – you just need to spot them.

The Media

The media is the next hurdle. Many people see the media as supreme beings that are unapproachable and not interested in what they or their organisation is doing. Wrong. The media are very approachable and need to hear from organisations – the media are interested in news worthy stories and as such they need you as much as you need them.

What needs to be understood is how to approach the media. Most journalists would appreciate a friendly informal conversation – if you think you have a good news worthy story, call up an appropriate journalist and have a talk to them about it. The other option is to write a press release and email it to them with a polite covering note. For many organisations, this is the most appropriate format as by writing a press release you get control over the copy (you may also need to get approval from customers or suppliers if you have mentioned them).

What can put the barriers up in terms of building a relationship with the media is expecting that they will publish what you send them. No one likes being told what to do so don’t try and force your story on to the media.

It would also be useful to build a media contact list. This will be relevant to the industry you operate in and could include trade publications relevant to your sector as well as local media.

Building relationships with the media can take time but it is time well spent as a good relationship with a journalist will open up many PR opportunities for you.

Making Your PR Go Further

It used to be a case of writing a press release and sending it to the media for publishing in a magazine or newspaper. Things have changed. Magazines and newspapers are still as strong as ever (despite the claim that print is dead by many people) but media opportunities, thanks to the internet, are now even wider.

When looking at distributing your PR, consider the online news forums. Remember to include your news on your website – visitors to your website will want to see what you have been up to. Also consider how your PR fits in with your social media activities – you can Tweet links to the news items that are on your website or that have been published. The copy would also make great contact for a printed or e-newsletter.

If you have taken the time and trouble to research and write a good PR piece, get the most out of it and put it through as many channels as possible.

Conclusion

There are good PR stories in every organisation, you just need to spot them. Once you have identified these PR opportunities, follow the simple steps of getting something drafted, approved and speak to some journalists. Build a media contact list and start to build relationships with these contacts. Make sure you get the most out of your PR – use every channel that is available to you.

If you follow these steps you will find that PR has a lot to offer and the hurdles aren’t quite as big as you think.

The Faster Route to Business Growth

A unique government-backed service for high growth companies, GrowthAccelerator, will be a key exhibitor at this year’s Kent 2020 Vision LIVE 2013 – speaking to Kent’s brightest businesses about how they can speed up their growth.

High growth businesses are key to driving England’s economy and Kent is no exception, with its vibrant and active business community. Just one year after its launch in early 2012, GrowthAccelerator is already working with many exciting and successful Kent companies to help them achieve rapid, sustainable growth.

GrowthAccelerator helps ambitious businesses to achieve their goals by identifying any barriers to growth and creating a tailored growth plan to overcome challenges and optimise opportunities. Each company then works with an expert coach who supports them with everything from access to finance, to creating a sales and marketing strategy. The service currently works with over 3,000 businesses from a diverse range of sectors – ranging from fashion to manufacturing, to tech focused businesses.

Kevin Nicholson, Growth Manager across Kent, explains why the GrowthAccelerator service is ideally suited to helping businesses that are already growing rapidly, as well as those who have the potential to do so: “Many businesses we work with have grown steadily since their inception, but there can be further opportunities to accelerate this growth which we can help them to exploit. However, the service isn’t just for companies who know what the growth opportunities are. Our role is to also help businesses identify opportunities which can sometimes be hidden or less obvious. We know that sometimes it’s hard to look at the bigger picture when you are so busy running your company, and that getting an expert outsider perspective can prove invaluable.”

Kevin is one of a team of hundreds of Growth Managers based throughout the country. These Growth Managers will identify the best plan of attack to help businesses overcome the most common growth barriers, which are usually around Leadership & Management, Access to Finance, Innovation and Business Development. Once they have worked with a business to create a detailed and bespoke growth plan, the company is ‘matched’ with an expert Growth Coach from a nationwide network of 800. Each coach is selected to have the right skills, experience and approach to ensure the business gets maximum impact from the service.

GrowthAccelerator is suitable for any company with high growth potential, with less than 250 employees and with a turnover of less than £40 million. Max Adam, Team Director of GrowthAccelerator said, “Achieving 20% growth year on year is a remarkable achievement for any business, and it has a significant positive impact on the economy.  The GrowthAccelerator service has been designed to help a wide variety of businesses towards realising their aims, balancing ambition and enthusiasm with commercial reality and the pragmatism of experienced coaches.”

Find out how you can benefit from this innovative new service by visiting the GrowthAccelerator team on Stand No.809 at Kent 2020 Vision LIVE on 25th April 2013.

What has KCC ever done for business?

Mark-Dance KCC (Lo)“So what has Kent County Council ever done for businesses in Kent?” That was the question put to me by a businessman at a recent event. I took a deep breath and let him have it with both barrels – for about twenty five minutes.  After which, he responded “Oh, quite a lot then!” And with that understatement he turned and walked away with his ears still ringing from my reply….

Well, he asked.

I will not bore you with all the detail but having reviewed my answer, I too was surprised by just how much KCC has worked with and for Kent businesses over the past few years. When you are so close to it all the time, you sometimes forget just how much has been achieved.

Let me give you just a taster of the projects I mentioned, both big and small:

> £35 million gained from the Government to deliver interest free loans to businesses via the Expansion East Kent (ExEK) Project, coupled with the Grow for It Campaign to encourage businesses to move to the area and grow.

> £20 million gained from the Government to deliver interest-free loans to businesses in the Thames Gateway via the TIGER project (and we are looking to apply for a fund for a third area, this time in West Kent).

> Working with High Growth Kent and other partners to encourage the rapid growth of prestige businesses and encourage Incubator programmes and Start-Ups throughout the breadth of the County.

> Working with Visit Kent, Produced in Kent and others to grow the tourism and food production agendas for Kent and encourage visitors and opportunities for local kent businesses.

> Kent Thameside and Ebbsfleet Quarry area has long been an area requiring investment. We have worked with partners to unlock that potential, including with the developers arising out of the exciting recent announcement that Paramount Studios are looking to invest and build in that area.

> We have held “Sector Conversations” to listen to the businesses involved in industries such as Low Carbon, Construction, Food Production, Health & Social Care, Creative, Manufacturing and Digital. By so doing we have been able to identify issues and blockages and provide a lobbying route to Government for change.

> Our partners at Locate in Kent continue to attract quality businesses to Kent and thus employment opportunities for Kent residents. Nearly 6,000 jobs since 2010 and the possibility of upwards of 9,000 more with KCC investing £450,000+ over the next three years in attracting Foreign Direct Investment/International Business.

Looking ahead, I see enormous potential for Kent businesses. We will soon have that elusive international air flight connection in and out of Manston. The Government has promised a result to the consultation on the Third Thames Crossing. We are undertaking a major tourism summit/conference later this month and are looking to highlight the potential for growth and investment in the Romney Marsh area at another event in March.

There are so many other areas we involve ourselves in and we are always proud to do so. For example, two of the marvellous initiatives supported by KCC and other partners are the KEIBA Awards – to identify and celebrate excellent Kent businesses – and the annual Kent 2020 Vision LIVE event next month.

Kent 2020 Vision Live 2013 is the largest business-to-business exhibition in the South East, providing a range of free seminars on current challenges and opportunities, expert advice on how to innovate and grow, inspirational thoughts and ideas on key business issues and a unique opportunity to mix with your peers, senior executives and government advisors. There are special zones focused on specific areas such as Apprenticeships, Low Carbon, Technology and Tourism and of course the opportunity for you to promote your own business.

So who should attend this free-to-attend event? If you are a business person and reading this blog, then the answer is YOU!

It is an event relevant to every sector, from Accountancy and Legal to Travel and Tourism. It is a key place to do business and forge new relationships, pick up new leads and make valuable connections for the future, especially if you decide to take a stand to showcase what your company can offer other Kent businesses.

Don’t miss out on this opportunity as we all strive to prove that KENT IS OPEN FOR BUSINESS.

Visitors can register online at www.kent2020.co.uk to benefit from free entry, priority parking, exclusive previews and a chance to win an iPad Mini.

Become a part of Kent’s Low Carbon Economy

There are currently between 17,000 and 25,000 people directly employed in the low carbon market in Kent and it is estimated that the sector could contribute up to £1bn to the county’s economy – which is why Kent County Council is proud to be sponsoring the Low Carbon Zone again at this year’s Kent 2020 Vision LIVE.

The low carbon sector has grown significantly in recent years and is expected to continue to grow, bringing more jobs to the county in Offshore Wind, Construction and Retrofit and Waste and Recycling.  Kent County Council’s Sustainable Business Team, with funding from the EU, is delivering support for small and medium businesses to take advantage of these opportunities as well as develop sustainable business models that ensure an organisation is prepared for climate change. KCC will be launching a range of services delivered through the Low Carbon Kent Business Network at the event and will be on hand to answer any questions and help you understand what you can do to become a low carbon business.

In the Low Carbon Zone, you can meet businesses who are already taking advantage of this market and are either offering low carbon goods and services or running their activities with minimal impact on the environment – reducing their carbon as well as their costs. You will find a wind power operator, construction companies who offer energy efficient improvements, eco-friendly washroom solutions, renewable energy providers, LED manufacturers, ethical web and graphic designers and carbon neutral cheesemakers to name but a few.

Come along to find out how you can be a part of this exciting and expanding sector – we look forward to seeing you there!

Business Transformation: Adapting your business to exploit the world of social media

Valuable advice from Katie King, Managing Director of Zoodikers, strategic marketing partner & exhibitor at Kent 2020 Vision LIVE on 25th April 2013 at the Kent Event Centre.

Be prepared to move outside of your comfort zone in 2013 as the only constant will be change. The continuous cycle of technological developments and the subsequent surge in social networking platforms have acted as a catalyst for what is now a period of business transformation, across every sector and within society as a whole. Witness HMV’s demise, and the poor performance of certain retailers who have failed to adapt and respond to the challenges of the new digital world.

Today’s average consumer is more connected and tech savvy than ever before, spending an increasing proportion of the day digesting and contributing to blogs, Twitter feeds, podcasts and a plethora of tailored news feeds. Social networking is being embraced by millions and is continuing to grow all over the world. For example, in the UK alone, there are over 10 million users on Twitter; Twitter usage has overtaken the numbers who buy a daily newspaper in the UK. The knock-on effect is as evident in the business-to-business world as it is for those selling direct to consumers. Companies are having to respond and consider how they can exploit this change for improved customer service and recruitment, and of course for better engagement and other marketing activity.

The challenge for businesses is how to align their existing business goals with this changing world, and ensure that time and money are not wasted on the wrong set of strategies and tactics.  Below are some tips on where to start.

Identify and track key audiences

The first step towards aligning your business goals with social media is to decide where your revenue will most likely come from in 2013 and how you can therefore influence those audiences with your key messages. Tracking your top 3-4 target audiences is the most critical step, but it’s also the most difficult one. Business people and consumers move from platform to platform, consuming new information at high speed. This also assumes a certain knowledge of these platforms, in order to exploit them fully.

One key tip is to deploy strategies that allow you to monitor viral video, as well as platforms such as Twitter and other social media sites. This can be very time consuming, but the use of effective, often free, monitoring tools and dashboards such as Hootsuite or Tweetdeck will enable you to track the debate and then contribute to and influence it.

Relevance

Social media platforms vary dramatically; the key to success is finding the most relevant platform, in other words the one that is inhabited by the biggest percentage of your target audiences. For example, you may decide to spend your time seeding messages and influencing via a popular Kent group in LinkedIn, or by contrast, one focused on your sector. Despite having over a billion members, Facebook may not actually be relevant to your target audience, whereas Twitter may provide a perfect warm ‘door opener’ to a whole host of prospective clients.  Or it could provide the perfect platform to amplify your PR campaigns – a great route to those often elusive news editors.

‘World of mouth’ – getting influencers on board

We’ve moved from a focus on word of mouth to ‘world of mouth’; a society where brands no longer have complete control. The sheer volume of fragmented channels of influence is hard for companies to keep track of; this has given rise to a powerful role played by online influencers. On Twitter for example this might be no more than a handful of influencers who help shape a brand’s image or keep a specific topic, such as the Living Wage, alive. Often these influencers can cut through the ‘noise’, because their audience trusts their points of view. These influencers may be very well connected and can help spread your message to thousands of their followers, via a simple retweet. Once identified, your task is to reach out to them, build a relationship, make it reciprocal and don’t try too hard to sell.

Invest, long-term, in the right eco-system

The good news is that return on investment (ROI) can be measured on social media platforms but the bad news is that achieving such success is not simple and cannot be achieved overnight. Phones don’t ring off the hook simply because you’ve achieved excellent editorial in the Kent Messenger or Retail Week; and in a similar vein, leads don’t arrive simply because you’ve managed to secure 2,000 followers on Twitter. They are called ‘vanity metrics’ for a reason.

Instead, you have to create an eco-system of trust and influence, which is inter-connected with offline activity such as networking, exhibiting at events like Kent 2020, sending direct mailshots etc. It takes time and investment and won’t simply deliver a series of short term gains. But if executed properly, you can exploit social media to transform your business and ensure its continued success in 2013 and beyond.

Wet Fish, Double-Touch or Hand Crusher?

200 exhibitors at the forthcoming Kent 2020 Vision LIVE 2013 gathered together at the Kent Event Centre last Thursday, to compare handshakes and gear up for the UK’s largest regional business event.

Last week’s Exhibitor Preview meeting provided exhibitors with a valuable half-day of hints, tips and practical advice on getting the most from this important annual networking event. Key contributors included Mark Dance of Kent County Council, Jane Ollis from BSK-CiC, Katie King from Zoodikers, Nick Litton from Revolution Events and Melanie Scott from Facts International, representing the Kent branch of the Chartered Institute of Marketing (CIM).

Guest speaker Christopher Barrat from Greystone Partnership provided some fascinating insights into effective networking within a live event environment – including an examination of key communication skills, objective-setting and follow-up techniques. Christopher’s highly interactive (and entertaining) session had guests practising handshakes such as the ‘wet fish’, ‘double-touch’ and ‘hand crusher’ while looking out for specific formations of new prospects, such as the ‘closed two’ or ‘open three’. He also encouraged all exhibitors to be ‘eagles not vultures’ while attending business exhibitions, taking a pro-active approach to meeting, greeting and giving – rather than resorting to antiquated ‘hard sell’ methods that rarely have a positive outcome.

You can catch some of the highlights on YouTube by clicking here.

With more than 75% of the space now sold for this year’s event (and another sell-out show predicted), potential exhibitors need to sign up fast to avoid missing out on this major opportunity to connect with new and existing customers. To check availability and stand options, please call Alice Boorman or Tom Healing at Revolution Events on 01892-820930. Stands start at just £128 per metre, making it easy to generate a great return on investment for businesses of all shapes & sizes.

The UK’s largest regional business event, Kent 2020 Vision LIVE, has announced some of its key speakers for Thursday 25th April 2013 at the Kent Event Centre, including the dynamic founder of i-2-i Travel, Deirdre Bounds.

The core theme of this year’s Kent 2020 Vision LIVE is ‘Get Connected’, reflecting the event’s key role in helping Kent businesses to access a wide range of exciting opportunities. In a single day at the Kent Event Centre, attendees can connect with current clients, potential customers, innovative suppliers, new partners, international markets, emerging technologies and specialist support providers, plus inspirational ideas and practical advice from many expert speakers.

By riding the wave of increasing consumer awareness about ethical issues and offering a high-quality alternative to the status quo, Deirdre was able to build i-2-i Travel into a multi-million pound business over the course of 10 years, before eventually selling the company to TUI for £16m in 2009.

“There are so many opportunities available to Kent businesses that we wanted this year’s theme to emphasise that the event is about much more than just bringing buyers and sellers together,” explains Jane Ollis, CEO of BSK-CiC, the organisation behind Kent 2020 Vision LIVE, “This really is a unique chance to discover and access opportunities that visitors may not even know existed – including emerging markets, new support services and some great innovations. In addition, our special ‘Tomorrow’s Business’ feature will provide an fascinating glimpse of how many organisations might look and operate in 5-10 years time, which fits perfectly with BSK’s role in preparing Kent businesses for the future.”

The Kent 2020 Vision show has become an important feature of the Kent business calendar and is now the largest regional business event in the UK, attracting over 300 exhibitors and around 3,000 attendees each year. The event is run as a close collaboration between BSK-Direct and Kent County Council, with strong support from the KM Group and the Kent Event Centre.
