Over 80% of marketers and business directors believe that live events deliver better ROI than other media (Facetime Research) and there’s a very simple reason for this…

Face-to-face events are one of the only marketing channels that can facilitate a two-way dialogue between you and your potential customers: enabling you to LISTEN and RESPOND to your audience in real time, instead of talking into a vacuum and hoping for feedback at a later date.

This is why more than 200 of Kent’s leading businesses will be coming together on 10th February to get fresh ideas on maximising their presence at this year’s Kent Vision LIVE (the new name for Kent 2020 Vision), where they will all be exhibiting in May.

Kicking off an information-packed morning will be guest speaker Richard Mullender, former hostage negotiator and now lead trainer at Scotland Yard’s National Crisis & Hostage Negotiation Unit.

Whether it’s negotiating with terrorists, talking down a would-be suicide from a rooftop or convincing a new customer to place their first order with you, Richard’s listening expertise is right at the cutting-edge. In his inimitable style, Richard translates the key skills of the world’s best hostage negotiators into a business context, helping you and your frontline staff to build rapport, gain trust and influence decisions.

After coffee and networking (and a chance to do business with each other before the May event), attendees will then be treated to a fascinating demonstration of how the human brain responds to different marketing stimuli, presented by customer experience specialists Saxonbury & Kent. This will be followed by an exclusive preview of the innovative BizTech LIVE feature being launched in May, designed to help Kent companies keep abreast of the latest technology developments and actively embrace the ones that will have the most positive impact on their business.

As the UK’s largest regional business event, Kent Vision LIVE 2016 is set to delivers more value, content and contacts than any other B2B forum in the South East: attracting more than 3,000 business buyers to the Kent Event Centre on Wednesday 11th May.

Growing Pains: SuperDry keynote confirmed

Happy New Year! We are pleased to start 2016 by announcing that the opening keynote for this year’s Kent Vision LIVE will be Chas Howes, former CFO of British retail sensation SuperDry.

Chas Howes served as Chief Financial Officer of SuperGroup, the company behind the phenomenally successful clothing and retail brand, SuperDry. Chas played a key role in growing the company from a handful of stores to over 200 outlets, increasing turnover from £41million to £314million and steering it through a troubled flotation on the London stock market.

Chas Howes - SuperDry (In Store)Prior to SuperGroup, Chas worked in various finance and strategy roles within the brewing and drinks sector, for established industry giants such as Fosters Group, Allied Domeq and Diageo – which made it all the more challenging to join the entrepreneurial chaos of the SuperDry team.

In his opening keynote at Kent Vision LIVE, Chas will speak about the SuperDry brand, the dynamic company culture that helped it to become a leading international player in the fashion industry and the many challenges of being the ‘sensible one’ in a rapidly evolving business: from modest beginnings in Cheltenham to stores in over 40 countries across Europe, the US, South America and Asia. He will share his insights into all aspects of the business, including its unique blend of modern-Japanese and retro-American style and its innovative strategy of targeting university cities, as well as its unconventional approach to advertising, celebrity endorsements and holding sales (they generally don’t do any of them).

Reserve your FREE place now to get the full story from Chas on 11th May 2016, kicking off our extensive programme of free keynotes, workshops and networking opportunities.

You can also get live news on other speakers and special features as soon as they are announced – by FOLLOWING this blog via the button in the top righthand corner.

Kent 2020 gets new name and image for 2016

Revolution Events today announced new names and new branding for Kent 2020 Vision LIVE, the South East’s premier portfolio of business-to-business events, including the UK’s largest regional B2B exhibition.

From 2016, the Kent 2020 events will be known as the Kent LIVE series, dropping the ‘2020’ to become Kent Vision LIVE, Startup LIVE, Marketing LIVE and BizTech LIVE.

LIVE Portfolio

The event series celebrated its Tenth Anniversary in May this year, at the same time as it was acquired in full by Kent-based Revolution Events, who had been organising the events on contract since 2011.

The name change and redesign also represents a relaunch and repositioning of the events for the next ten years, with plans to significantly broaden their appeal to departmental heads, functional managers and other decision-makers, in addition to the core audience of business owners and entrepreneurs.

“Over the past ten years, the ‘2020’ part of the brand has been widely interpreted as relating to the Year 2020 – when it was originally intended to signify perfect 20/20 vision” says Rich Tribe, Joint Managing Director of Revolution, launching the new look today. “With the actual Year 2020 drawing closer, the number element was becoming increasingly confusing and there were firm plans to phase it out even before we took the reins.”

“Hence, we have taken the opportunity to combine this with a more substantial redesign of the brand, in line with some exciting changes we are making for 2016,” continues Tribe. “FACTS International conducted extensive face-to-face research with visitors at our May event, which has prompted a number of exciting innovations and enhancements that we will be unveiling over the next six months.”

Also launched today is the new website for Kent Vision LIVE, incorporating the new image and free registration for places on Wednesday 11th May 2016:

Future Vision: The Rise of AI in Business

Technology visionary Katie King of Zoodikers takes a look at the business implications of Artificial Intelligence (AI) ahead of her opening session at the first BizTech LIVE on 20th October.

When you think of artificial intelligence (AI), what’s the first thought that comes to mind? Aliens? Synthesisers? You might automatically think of films such as Terminator or Her and TV programmes such as Channel 4’s Humans – each personifying an idea of what it is to be artificially intelligent. For many people, this is enough information for them to grasp the basic concept of AI, although in reality, it is much harder to understand. But with the development of Tianhe-2 in China and the introduction of IBM’s cognitive computing system, Watson, the world around us is subtly changing in a way that puts a huge question mark on what the future of humanity holds.

C4 Humans

As a starting point, there are three progressive advancements of AI, being ANI, AGI and ASI…

Most of us are already well acquainted with Artificial Narrow Intelligence (ANI) such as Siri, mobiles, email filters and car navigators. This form of AI, also known as Weak AI, is programmed to specialise in one just area.

Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) is what scientists and thought leaders believe will exist by 2040: a computer that is just as smart as a human in all aspects of planning, reasoning and solving problems. And that’s only 25 years from now.

Skip forward another 20 years to 2060 and we may see irreversible revolutionary change with the creation of Artificial Super Intelligence (ASI): a computer that is much smarter than a human brain and could well well lead to life on Earth (as we know it) changing forever.

To gain a deeper understanding of this potentially life-changing technology advancement, scientists, futurists and leading experts in the field of technology and evolution such as Ray Kurzweil, Vernor Vinge and Nick Bostrom have researched and predicted many potential outcomes. Director of Engineering at Google, Ray Kurzweil, predicts that the human species itself will soon become artificially intelligent –   referring to mechanical organs, ultra-efficient blood cells and even not needing a heart to survive – but his notion that we will all become hybrids by 2030 may seem overly optimistic.

Stephen Hawking, theoretical physicist and researcher at the University of Cambridge, warns that we need to be braced for the impending change that AI will bring and need to start considering now what could happen once it surpasses the intelligence of the human brain. Paypal and Tesla billionaire Elon Musk has expressed similar views. They both believe there needs to be more effort made to analyse the developments of AI and how it will affect society and the safety of our species. If artificial intelligence is to eclipse human intelligence and capabilities, what will this mean for the job markets and other areas of human society?

There may even be a chance to cure diseases and avoid mortality and extinction – but what will these advances mean for businesses?

In the finance sector, Martin Ford, author of Rise of the Robots, observes that 70% of equity trades are achieved through algorithms, significantly diminishing the need for a human workforce. Another sector that has already felt the impact of advanced automation is agriculture, where the proportion of the workforce employed across England and Wales has dramatically reduced from 6.6% in 1871 to 0.2% today – a 95% decline.

To counteract the threat of a jobless world for humans, there are cases whereby labour and technology are complementary in their relationship. This is evident in specialised professions such as medicine and more creative job roles in marketing and design. In these sectors, technology is aiding productivity and accelerating results, in turn creating more jobs.

The application of technology in a knowledge-intensive economy also allows professionals such as accountants and consultants to automate many basic or routine tasks, freeing up time to focus on a broader range of potential work and business progression.

Furthermore, the thought of artificial intelligence taking over laborious jobs such as window cleaning or structural building work, which can be mundane and often dangerous, doesn’t seem like such a terrible idea. According to a study by Deloitte, increases in innovation have generated a rise in disposable income as prices of services and goods decrease. In turn, this has resulted in the creation of more jobs, most prominently within the hospitality and grooming sectors as people gain more leisure time to spend in bars and at the hairdressers.

Another industry already facing imminent transformation from the rise of artificial intelligence is Facilities Management. This interdisciplinary field, which focuses on people, place, processes and technology within the built environment, encompasses jobs such as security, landscaping, front of house, cleaning and catering solutions. With AI initially poised to claim low-skilled jobs such as these, the sector is already working out how it will need to adapt and assimilate these changes to provide faster, more effective services.

The idea that artificial intelligence will give way to a revolutionary world which may or may not include human life is a scary thought – but with advancements quickening in pace, ensuring AI is programmed responsibly in order to maximise the benefits and avoid disaster is vital as we watch this next stage of evolution unfold.

Marketing 2025: Transformational thinking in the digital age

Marketing specialists from CIM, IoD / Disney, Hootsuite and others offer valuable tips on how to improve your marketing in the short, medium and long terms at Kent 2020 Vision Marketing LIVE on 20th October.

The Chartered Institute of Marketing (CIM) believes that transformational thinking will become more and more important as the marketing profession continues to evolve, especially with the inexorable rise of digital media as the new ‘weapon of choice’ for many marketers.

Steve Woolley - CIMTo find out why, make sure you join CIM’s External Affairs Manager, Steve Woolley, for his keynote speech at next month’s Kent 2020 Marketing event. Steve will be exploring the latest trends and thought leadership highlighted by the Institute’s ongoing research programme – and taking a close look at how these are likely to shape the industry over the next 20 years.

Of course, marketing has never been just for ‘big’ companies with ‘big’ budgets and has always been an essential discipline for all successful businesses – whatever their spending power and however long they have been established. In the digital 21st Century, it has never been easier to create new products, services and market niches, presenting major opportunities for ventures that understand the importance of market positioning, building awareness and engaging directly with customers – and a major threat to current market leaders if they don’t!

Tom Christie-Miller - IoD & DisneyDrawing on his experience at The Walt Disney Company for his session “Big Marketing Strategies for Every Size of Business”, Tom Christie-Miller, now Marketing Director at the Institute of Directors (IoD) , will explain why businesses of every shape and size are having to develop increasingly customer-centric marketing strategies to stay ahead of the competition in a constantly evolving marketplace.

Other workshops in our dedicated Marketing stream offer valuable advice on generating tangible results via social media, search engine optimisation (SEO) and mid-funnel marketing, presented by social media expert Zoe Cairns and digital marketing leaders such as Hootsuite, Reflect Digital and Objective Designers.

PLUS: Don’t miss Google’s special Digital Garage workshop at 3.30-4.15pm. Click here for more details.

Young entrepreneur Ben Towers to speak at Kent Start-Up event

Local businessman Ben Towers is sure to inspire new entrepreneurs in his special session at next month’s Kent 2020 Vision Start-Up LIVE at the Kent Event Centre.

As one of the UK’s most successful young businessmen, Ben Towers started his first company, Towers Design, aged 11  and is already living proof that the Internet has swept away many of the obstacles that previously deterred would-be entrepreneurs – especially young people without any significant capital behind them.

Ben TowersBy dramatically reducing the time and cost of getting new ventures off the ground, the web has created a new wave of start-ups that are not afraid to challenge established market-leaders by doing things differently and leveraging digital channels. With Towers Design now going strong and new venture Social Marley currently at funding stage, Ben’s story illustrates perfectly how self-belief is now one of the only obstacles for anyone with an innovative business idea that wants to make it a reality.

Kent 2020 Vision Start-Up LIVE is a unique event for new business owners, aspiring entrepreneurs and anyone looking to start their own venture in the South East.

Entry is FREE when you register online and you can read more about Ben’s latest venture in this recent article in KM Online.

Introducing the newest member of the Kent 2020 family

Keep up-to-date with the latest technology trends at the inaugural BizTech LIVE event, taking place alongside Kent 2020 Vision Marketing LIVE and Kent 2020 Vision Start-Up LIVE on 20th October.

Despite being a key driver for growth, ‘Business Technology’ has traditionally been viewed as a subject for IT departments and dedicated ICT professionals – with most events tailored specifically to this audience – but many SMEs don’t have the luxury of a dedicated IT department.

Which is why we are pleased to launch BizTech LIVE as a key component of the Kent 2020 portfolio, to meet the growing need for information and advice about the new technologies, tools and techniques that can help SMEs to innovate and thrive. This exciting new event is designed to help business owners and managers to understand key technologies, identify the ones that will benefit their business most and ensure they are using them safely and effectively.

BizTech Logo

The UK buys and sells more online than any other G20 country and many of Kent’s small firms are already making innovative use of the Internet to deliver real savings, better productivity and sustained revenue growth opportunities. But research from the Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) has also highlighted significant missed opportunities, partly due to lacklustre connection speeds but also due to low awareness of powerful innovations such as Cloud, SaaS, Big Data, the Internet of Things, Mobility, Social Media, Service Automation, Future Communications, eHealth, eLearning, eGovernment, Digital Cash, Digital Payments, Augmented Reality and Embedded Intelligence.

Demystifying many of these technologies in our new BizTech stream will be experts such as keynote speaker Mike Jones from BT on the new age of business communications, Digital Ambassador to the EU Roger Williams launching FSB’s ambitious ‘Digital Garden’ initiative and Katie King from Zoodikers on the imminent emergence of Artificial Intelligence.

Kent 2020 - ITRM Blackjack Stand (Small)

Four months after the event, IT solutions provider ITRM reports that they are still following up the large number of sales leads generated by their popular casino-themed exhibition stand.

“We decided to make ourselves stand out at Kent 2020 by bringing a full-size blackjack table and really encouraging visitors to interact with us,” says ITRM’s Sales Manager Danny Hill, “This approach worked brilliantly and we met dozens of local businesses who will benefit hugely from working with us.”

“The event has evolved significantly over the past five years and we almost couldn’t believe what a great response we got from a single day’s marketing activity.”

Pret A Manger provides a tasty start on 20th October

Visitors to this Autumn’s Kent 2020 events for start-ups and marketers will be treated to some great food-for-thought at the start of the day, presented by Mark Palmer from Pret A Manger.

As one the UK’s most recognisable and best-loved food outlets, Pret A Manger has succeeded in generating a level of customer loyalty that most businesses can only dream of, with a uniquely quirky ‘personality’ and a brand identity that can be recognised instantly down a busy high street.

In his opening keynote at Kent 2020 Vision Start-Up and Marketing LIVE, Marketing Director Mark Palmer will offer some fascinating insights into the art of winning market share in a crowded market – by using precise positioning, continuous innovation and niche marketing as powerful tools for growth, both at Pret and other businesses he has helped to build.

Pret

Before joining Pret, Mark made his reputation as Global Brand Director of Green & Black’s, moving it from niche organic to premium everyday chocolate and pushing sales from £4m to £40m before its acquisition by Cadbury Schweppes. Mark remained with the company to make sure that Green & Black’s retained its highly entrepreneurial approach to product development and testing: typically bringing a product to market in six months (versus an industry norm of 18-24 months) by applying instinct and common sense instead of a traditional figures-based approach.

As a recognised thought leader and marketing pioneer, Mark featured in the Marketing Power 100 for two successive years in his unofficial role as champion of entrepreneurs and small business and was named ‘Marketer of the Year’ by The Marketing Society during his time with Green & Black’s.

Mark will be joined at the event by inspirational speakers from Disney, the Institute of Directors (IoD), Hootsuite, BT, Zoodikers, the Chartered Institute of Marketing (CIM) and the Kent-based young entrepreneur Ben Towers (amongst others) – all offering valuable ideas and advice for businesses looking to maximise their potential over the coming years.

The danger of too much pick-n-mix…

Ahead of her keynote session at Kent 2020 Vision Marketing LIVE on 20th October, speaker Katie King from Zoodikers explains why smart marketers need to avoid getting distracted by short-term ‘vanity’ metrics.

Faced with such a wide choice of shiny new tactics and digital marketing tools – from monitoring solutions like Sendible to video blogging opportunities – today’s marketing professionals could be forgiven for feeling like an indecisive child in their favourite sweetshop.

Kent 2020 - Katie King (LO)

In an increasingly technology-driven world brimming with opportunities offered by big data and the Internet of Things, senior managers and their marketing teams have a mammoth task of firstly defining their business goals and then researching the optimal marketing tools available to help them achieve these aims.

Another major driver is typically cost and the need to ensure a return on investment. The good news is that, faced with so much competition, the majority of marketing tools entice users via a ‘Freemium’ model, whereby they are free to use, until the point that you require the full product functionality, at which point you pay for a ‘Pro’ subscription – for example with Hootsuite.  There are a vast range of measurement options available, from tracking the source of traffic to your website using Google Analytics, through to social media platform based metrics such as Twitter Analytics.

Within this ‘pick-n-mix’ environment, it is easy to be drawn into spending budget on short term tools which fare well under the banner of these so-called vanity metrics.  But the wise marketing expert will devote more time to supporting the company’s mid and long term goals, for example increasing sales or profits, or perhaps building PR profile at events like Kent 2020 ahead of a trade sale or a listing on a stock exchange.

The essential ingredients for success are a strategic focus and the integration of all of these marketing tools to ensure that they have an impact on the bottom line. It sounds simple, but in practice it is difficult, as it requires teams/departments to plan and work alongside one another instead of in silos, or even worse, competing with one another.

Even if your business continues to bury its head in the sand, the indisputable fact is that today’s smart-phone enabled consumer is using digital channels to research and buy their desired products and services.  These savvy individuals will not be bamboozled with blatant sales messages via websites and social media channels.  They use such channels to engage with brands and expect to deploy them for recruitment; to receive and share their experiences of customer service; and to become advocates of brands who promote causes close to their heart, or share content they find funny or important.
